Emotions
How do you deal with everyday emotions? Your job is entirely based on people’s emotions. You have to continuously interact with individuals who emotionally act as if they were on a giant roller coaster. Who are they? Buyers and sellers and their families, collaborating brokers, managers and owners, mortgage brokers, inspectors… and don’t forget to include yourself.
Will they accept the Promise to Purchase, the counter-proposal, the inspection report? Each time an emotional turmoil based on fears and apprehensions, these may or may not be related to the transaction itself. Most often, they are about one’s personal financial situation (often precarious), or either party wanting to “win” or not wanting to lose face.
Understand that from your perspective, one of the most dangerous emotions to have is self-pity. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as “a feeling of pity for yourself because you believe you have suffered more than is fair or reasonable”. In other words, it shouldn’t be this hard, this complicated.
One of my favorite citations is from D.H. Lawrence… it reads:
« I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for himself. »
I know of no other emotions that diminish one’s courage and strength; self-pity steals from you taking away your energy and inner strength preventing you from growing and accomplishing. The question is not why it is so hard, or unfair, or did I deserve this. No! The question is: what do I choose to do today onward? The truth is that sometimes life will treat you harshly; so what? Do not let yourself down; do not get discouraged when life does not smile down on you… for a brief moment. It is up to you to choose the next step.
How would your life be if rather than complaining (justified or not) you decided to reach into that tremendous inner power and grow, and win, and thrive? What happiness and success does life hold for you? No you will not drop frozen dead I guarantee it. In fact, I promise you that if you get back up you will fly high and strong.
What does life have in store for you?
